As part of a broader commitment to sustainable mobility, WashU has installed 16 new Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the Danforth Campus, increasing the number of ports to 39 total. This expansion is a response to growing demand among EV drivers while aligning with regional and national trends in vehicle electrification.
The new stations are located in the Snow Way, Millbrook, Wallace, Shepley and East End garages, with real-time availability and instructions accessible via the ChargePoint app. These additions make EV charging more convenient for campus users, from daily commuters to visitors.
“EVs reduce emissions per mile by approximately 35-50% when charged on Missouri’s current grid electricity. The reductions will only improve as utility-scale renewables expand and coal plants retire in the coming years,” said Phil Valko, assistant vice chancellor for Sustainability. “WashU is committed to supporting vehicle electrification by expanding charging infrastructure. In the new pricing model, WashU invests the cost of the charging infrastructure, but gains revenue to re-invest in future EV chargers and maintain our existing ones.”

How Charging Will Work
- Until July 31, 2025: Charging is free for users.
- Starting August 1, 2025: Users will be charged $0.26 per kilowatt-hour via the ChargePoint app.
Charging helps to recover part of the infrastructure and operational costs while keeping the service aligned with regional pricing averages. The current pricing structure is competitive with other EV charging stations in the region. It supports the university’s investment in EV infrastructure while maintaining access for the community.
Why It Matters
- Cost-effective for users: EVs cost 15–40% less per mile to operate than gas vehicles.
- Financial sustainability: Parking & Transportation will continue to invest in the infrastructure, while modest revenue from charging operations will help sustain future EV efforts.
- Environmental benefit: More EVs on campus contribute to better air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
WashU’s goal is to provide access to sustainable transportation while anticipating community needs. Ongoing monitoring and feedback will help shape how this infrastructure grows in the future.
